It is a friendly place, low on crime and high on social values. The city encompasses six square miles of family programs, small town charm, culture and tradition. The city, in the second century of its life, has a tradition of sponsoring festivals, offering meaningful yet fun programs for children and youth, and promoting arts and music. The city maintains beautiful parks and playgrounds that cater to its approximately 20,000 residents.
The City of Fairfax is an independent enclave inside the confines of Fairfax County. It is the county seat, in spite of being politically independent of the county. Fairfax is part of the Washington, DC area in the northern Virginia region. The area was first settled by farmers from the Tidewater region of Virginia in the early 18th century. Officially named the Town of Fairfax in 1874, the name changed to the present form when it was declared an independent city in 1961.
From mid 2005, the City of Fairfax, especially the old town, has seen a surge of redevelopment that has added, among other things, a new 45,000 square foot Fairfax City Regional Library, alongside retail outlets, restaurants, offices, and residential units. A prime opportunity of the artistically inclined to immerse themselves in art, music, dance, theater, and concerts, the event venues are spread throughout the city.
The innumerable trails, open spaces and parks in the city are a dream destination of the outdoorsy resident as well as tourists looking for a closer commune with nature. For the kids, and the fireworks enthusiasts, there is the largest hometown parade and fireworks celebration in the Washington metropolitan region, not to mention parades, historic tours and an Old Fashioned Fireman's Day with live concert and fireworks display. A festival of Irish and Celtic song, dance, and music every September is a nice way to access some alternate culture.
