Wimberley Facts, History, and Local Events

A small town, Wimberley, Hays County is in the middle of the County, and falls between Austin and San Antonio. Is was a Census Designated Place until 2007, when it was incorporated. It is a 17 mile drive from San Marcos, and between a 150 to 200 miles from Houston and Dallas. With a population of around 4,000, this is truly a small town, but a great place to visit nevertheless. And, of course, small towns are generally nice places to bring up a family in. The surrounding Texas Hill Country and the Wimberley Valley are part of the central flyway for migratory birds, and a variety of natural beauty, plants and animals abound in the area. Texas wildflowers cover the area in spring, and draw tourists, while visitors arrive year round to enjoy the tranquil natural beauty the climate, and the activities. For locals, apart from being a peaceful and calm small town, Wimberley also has some great schools run by the Wimberley Independent School District. These are some of the best schools in Texas, in terms of both the scholastic and the athletic achievement of their students. There are four modern public school campuses, and a few private, and charter schools.

Wimberley Texas Area MapWimberley is also centrally located, and can be the perfect base for extended trips to other hill country destinations close by. Getting to Wimberley is pleasant too, and the drive into town is beautiful. Whether you arrive from San Marcos via Dripping Springs, and Devil's Backbone, or from Blanco, its an amazingly relaxing country drive to get into Wimberley. Visitors and locals alike are charmed by the sheer beauty of the Cypress, the calm pools and the rippling waters of the Blanco River and Cypress Creek. The area is rich in greenery, open meadows, and rugged hills, and inhabited by the white-tailed deer which often startle visitors. There is much to do, from hiking and climbing to fishing, swimming and boating, from sports like golf and tennis, to local resources for arts and crafts. Camping is a popular recreation too.

The city was established in 1848 and started as a little trading post with no name close to Cypress Creek. The town derives its name from Pleasant Wimberley who bought the mill on the site in 1874, and eventually expanded it to a largish processing unit for flour, molasses, lumber, shingles, and cotton. Although the mill itself actually shut down in 1925, the community built around it continued to grow, and became the resort town of today. Cause of its superb natural beauty, and un-bustled lifestyle, Wimberley attracts artists, retirees, and people who wish to escape the grind of big city life - temporarily or permanently. The weather is unpredictable though, and locals and visitors need to be prepared for just about anything. In general, summers are hot and winters mild, with some frost.

Entertainment is surprisingly varied, for a mall town, and live music shows, unique shopping opportunities, Arts and Crafts Galleries, antique hunting, and the great outdoors are only some of the options available. There is an outdoor movie theatre, live theatre performances at the EmilyAnn Theatre, the Wimberley Glass Works, golf, lavender fields, camping, swimming and hiking.
