Spring Facts, History, and Local Events

Spring is a town located some twenty miles to the north of the city of Houston, Texas, and situated in Harris County. Spring it is a small unincorporated area that sits between Houston and The Woodlands. Although situated in the Northern Harris County, spring is a census-designated place that spills over into Southern Montgomery County and falls within the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the city of Houston. It is a charming suburban community of about 40,000 people with a good level of access to the amenities of a big city. Although both U.S. News, and World Reports, have ranked Spring among the Top 1,000 Places To Retire in the US, the community has much to offer everyone, regardless of their age. It has an excellent school system, boasts scenic, heavily wooded, landscaped neighborhoods, offers great shopping opportunities, has a range of dining choices, and an excellent system of parks. It also has a number of world class, professionally designed golf courses, and many museums, in addition to a quick access to some of the best amenities of a big city. These factors make the community a good great place for residents, and visitors. As a result, it is among the fastest growing areas within the state.

Spring Texas Area MapAlthough Spring has maintained its rural atmosphere and small town feel, it hasn’t compromised on growth either, and has become an active and vibrant community for every age group and lifestyle. Old Town Spring provides a range of shopping and dining experiences in a historic environment, while Spring Town Center, located at Kuykendahl and FM 2920 is another shopping and dining hotbed. Spring is served by two school districts; the Spring Independent School District and the Klein Independent School District. Both districts are highly ranked in terms of student achievement and a number of private schools also exist, for those preferring a private school education. In terms of higher education, the area is served by the Lone Star College System and the North Harris County College. Spring is now ranked among the most popular locations in terms of both residential and commercial growth in the entire Houston Metropolitan Region.

Spring is also home to an added attraction for both tourists and residents. Splashtown, the sole amusement park within the Houston Metropolitan Area, is located here. And that’s not all. Old Town Spring and Spring Town Center are both great tourist draws, and Spring also houses The Barbara Bush Library. The numerous parks in the community include Collins Park, Bayer Park, Klein Park, Pundt Park Meyer Park, Cypresswood Golf Club, and Southwell Park, as well as the Spring Creek Greenway Project. The town is notable for its sense of community, and strong sense of its roots.

The Old Town Spring area preserves the local historic heritage with restored buildings which house numerous boutiques, wineries, galleries, and specialty stores. This part of Spring also hosts many of the annual events. Annual vents hosted in Spring include the Springfest, in March, which is a Wine, Art & Food Festival. In April, catch the Texas Crawfish & Music Festival, while September and October see the Long Horn Rod Run and the beginnings of Down Home Christmas. Springs has a theatre, a museum, a library, and it is minutes away from Texas attractions like the Cypress Creek Park Project, the Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Jesse H Jones Park and Nature Center, the Woodlands Waterway, and the Woodlands Mall.

Historically, the area that is now the community of Spring, was the home of the Orcoquiza people. A Texas General Council placed the area in the Harrisburg municipality in 1836, and a trading post was built here, in 1838, by William Pierpont. Numerous German immigrants arrived in the area in the 1840s, and people from the southern states began to settle here after the Civil War. By 1947, Spring was already beginning to show exponential growth. When Houston suburbs started expanding north in the 1970s, expand to the north, more and more residential areas began to be built in Spring as well, sparking off the current boom.
