Lake Travis Facts, History, and Local Events

Lake Travis is a reservoir, on a stretch of the Colorado River. It is roughly 65 miles long, and is located in Travis County in central Texas. It was formed, in 1942, by the impounding of water from the Colorado River for the construction of the Mansfield Dam. This dam is just west of the city of Austin, and was built by the Lower Colorado River Authority. One of the seven Highland Lakes, Lake Travis has the by far the largest capacity for water storage. The lake stretches from its beginnings in western Travis County, through southern Burnet County, all the way to the Max Starcke Dam near Marble Falls. Lake Travis, the fifth down among the Highland Lakes, is also a popular destination for boating and water sports. A number of communities are located around Lake Travis, including Lakeway on Highway 620, Lago Vista, and Jonestown, both on Highway 1431, and Briarcliff on Hwy 2322 off Highway 71. Both Lakeway and Lago Vista are golfing communities, within and easy drive from Austin, and perfect for enthusiasts of the sport, as well as retirees. The surroundings of Lake Travis are the rolling hills of Texas Hill Country, with spectacular views and charming people. The Lake Travis area is perfect for water sports, fishing, and golf.

Lake Travis Texas Area MapBecause of the large volume and storage capacity that Lake Travis has, it serves as a primary method of flood control in the area. It also provides most of the water for the Austin Metropolitan Area, irrigates downstream farms, and generates electricity. Lake Travis is also lined with resort communities that are much in demand by Austin buyers seeking natural beauty, escape from crowds, thrilling views, and the many recreational activities offered here. The Lake Travis area is also a prime golfing destination, and a number of country clubs and many golf communities dot the shores. In addition, its crystal clear waters provide a most desired recreational location for outdoor activities, like water sports, fishing, picnicking, camping, hunting, and tennis, not to mention golf. It is, of course, one of the clearest of the Highland Lakes, with crystal streams, huge oaks, towering cedars, and majestic hills all around it. As a result, the Lake Travis area has an unparalleled diversity. From carpets of vibrant and colorful wildflowers in spring, to a gamut of fall colors in autumn leaves, to warm summer days and balmy winter nights perfect for camping, boating or an outdoor barbecue. Wildlife is abundant and varied, ranging from the ubiquitous white tailed deer, to armadillos and mockingbirds make for perfect communion with nature.

But that’s not all that the area has to offer. Being the center of so much tourist, recreational and sport activity has helped business communities to flourish. There is a multitude of unique shops and local boutiques, and recently constructed, and under construction, stores and malls offer nationally and internationally known retailers. The area has also become home to the service industry in a big way, with a range of hotels, motels, resorts, spas, boutique hotels, RV parks, and tent camps. There are also a range of outfitters providing all manner of water sport equipment. Events in the area, on the lake, range from regattas, multi class, sailboat, windsurfing; to ski boat competitions and more. Lake Travis has multiple marina facilities, a number of public parks, and lots of boat ramps for easy access to the water. Combine that with the amazing Texas Hill Country weather, and it is no wonder that the Lake Travis area attracts outdoor enthusiasts in droves, and is the most frequented of all the Highland Lakes. Its close proximity to the city of Austin, and its sheer size, make a perfect vacation destination for people seeking active recreations and plenty of fun for both adults and kids. Being so close to Austin, the Lake Travis area provides peaceful lifestyle to its residents, within easy distance of the capital of Texas.
