Texas Hill Country Facts, History, and Local Events

The Texas Hill Country is a popular name for a region of Central Texas, consisting of some 9 counties. The exact boundaries of the Hill Country are ambiguous, and different people have different opinions of the exact limits. General opinion puts the Hill Country limits at just north of Austin, south at San Antonio, and westwards for around 200 miles before the area flattens out. The main features of the area are its tall rugged hills, composed of limestone or granite. The area has been a favorite destination not just for Texans but for people from all over the U.S. it is also becoming a popular location to retire to, second only to Florida. The Texas Hill Country consists of about 55 cities and urban areas, and covers a range of beautiful natural attractions.

Texas Hill Country Texas Area MapThere are lush forests, large plains, arid deserts, rugged mountains, beaches, and wetlands. The heart of Texas, the Hill Country is a veritable playground for people of all ages looking for the ideal spot to enjoy nature, have fun, hang out, or relocate to. For the urban minded, there are big cities such as Austin, and the more suburban personality has the option of choosing smaller towns such as Bandera. It is a beautiful area, crystal streams, majestic oaks and cedars, and towering hills offer breathtaking beauty and the friendliness of the people gives the locals and visitors a relaxing and charming atmosphere. Another attraction is the mild winter, perfect for enjoying the outdoor attractions, wildlife, and nature. Thats probably the reason that five million visitors flock to the area annually.

The area was pretty much unknown until about a hundred years ago. When cars became common, and people had more leisure, the concept of holidaying really took off in America. The exodus to the Hill Country began when Texans came looking for places to spend free time. Soon summer camps were built for children and vacation cabins went up for the grown ups. As Texas became one of the most populated states in America, more and more people began to discover and popularize the region. The Texas country is famous for a lot of things now, not the least of which is its cattle country. The hills also provide myriad opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming, camping, and much more. Other natural features include caves, like the Natural Bridge Caverns, the Inner Space Caverns, Bracken Cave, Cascade Caverns, Longhorn Cavern State Park, and numerous others. There are several rivers, tributaries of the Colorado River which run across the region, and rivers like the San Antonio, Guadalupe, Frio, etc, originate right here in the Texas Hill Country.

The Texas hill country is an economically hardy area. No matter what ups and downs the American economy, as a whole, goes through, certain parts of the country have remained relatively free of economic swings, and this region is one such area. Over the decades, it has remained good investment choice for business investors as well as property owners. The Balcones Fault, along the eastern limits of the Hill Country, is among the fastest growing areas in Texas, and the ease of access to the area, through international airports in each of its major cities, and relative closeness to Houston and the Dallas makes it a good place for business. Austins hi-tech industry forms part of the economic base of the area, as does the medical and tourism industry in San Antonio. Over the last few decades, the region has also emerged as the epicenter of the wine industry in the state, and tourism has assumed a growing importance in the economic development as well. The Hill Country has also made Texas second only to Florida, the most popular retirement destination in the United States. With towns like Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Gruene, Luckenbach, New Braunfels, Marble Falls, and Utopia, the Hill Country area is a good place to live, raise a family, and spend the golden years.

The culture of the area is a unique fusion of Spanish with Central European influences. There are Austrian, Czech, German, and Swiss influences in the local food and beer, as there are in the architecture and the music. Settled over the ages by central and Eastern Europeans, the area still holds onto those influences in its culture, and one can hear the older folks Fredericksburg, Boerne or New Braunfels speaking in German. History comes alive in the antiques shops, olde-worlde Main Streets, and distinctly European celebrations. Homemade jams and jellies, and fresh baked bread, home-grown herbs and lavender, Stonewall peaches, local goat cheese, and local mohair products like sweaters and shawls, are just one aspect of this cultural quirk. There are monthly flea markets, like those at Gruene, Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Wimberley, and live traditional music, like the oompah performances of The Boerne Village Band.

Recreation is a year-round affair in the Texas Hill Country of everything from hiking, biking, rock climbing, and tours of local caves, to tubing on the region's crystal clear rivers. the Canyon Lake, just north of San Antonio, offers eight public parks. These are perfect for fishing, swimming, camping, scuba diving, wildlife viewing, and much more family fun. The Hill Country range of dining experience varies from small cafes to fine restaurants, fast food joints, delis, and pubs. Hunting is another experience available in the Hill Country, and enthusiasts can hunt white tail deer, and other animals. There are any numbers of museums, art galleries, fairs, shops, dances, live theater events, opera, orchestra, bands and shows.
