Dripping Springs Facts, History, and Local Events
Dripping Springs, Texas, is a gateway to the magnificent Central Texas Hill Country, located very close to the urban centers of Austin, Johnson City, and San Antonio. It is a charming, beautiful, and slow-paced city, surrounded by spectacular scenery and full of welcoming people. This is the perfect place to stop and smell the roses, take a lungful of the clean Hill Country air, and enjoy the wonderful shops or the good food. The city has a rich history, well known shopping establishments, and is famous for barbecue. Dripping Springs has a total population of about 2000 people, and is a charming semi-rural city surrounded by rolling hills, clear creeks, lots of wildlife and spectacular views.
Blending the charming Hill Country life with the conveniences and benefits of city living, the city has become an important bedroom community for the city of Austin. The rural, agricultural ambience of Dripping Springs makes it the perfect home for its large population of artists, craftsmen, and organic and exotic animal farmers. This rapidly growing community is also attractive to families, with a top rated school system and a small town feel. Its nearness to cities like San Antonio and Austin is convenient, but the city is a close knit community whose very lifestyle makes ample space for personal and professional growth. Many of the residents commute to Austin for work, and the community keeps its agricultural base with ranches raising cattle, goats or sheep, many or more exotic animals like ostriches, fallow deer, elk, llamas, and buffalo.
The town was founded in 1854 when three Mississippi families, related to each other, arrived in the area. They chose this spot, close enough to Austin, the capital of the state, and Fredericksburg, but far enough to be surrounded by Indians and considered part of the frontier. In 1857 the community appointed a postmaster, and needed a name in order to get a post office. This was when the community was named Dripping Springs, after one such spring in the town. Soon, the city grew into a stagecoach stop, eventually also a part of the freight line from Austin to Fredericksburg. Until very recently, Dripping Springs remained unincorporated until, in 1981, it was incorporated to prevent annexation by Austin. Until even two decades ago, the city grew quite slowly, and remained a one crossroad town.
Today, Dripping Springs is among the most rapidly growing communities here, in the area. The city and the Chamber of Commerce have launched a joint effort to attract and retain businesses and professionals in Dripping Springs. The city has added some 100,000 square feet to its existing commercial space, and business parks are being constructed to provide retail and office space. With an aim at achieving diversity in the economic base, the priority is to build a skilled workforce and develop business partnerships. The Dripping Springs Independent School District is an important part of the community and has five campuses in the area. Quality teaching staff, and strong community support, has made it one of the best in the state, in terms of student achievement.
