Drifitwood Facts, History, and Local Events

Driftwood, Texas, is a small town, with a core town population of about 30 and a total population, in the area of about 1,500. It is unincorporated and located in Central Hays County, about 5 miles Southeast of Dripping Springs, 17 miles to the Northwest of San Marcos, and about 16 miles to the Northeast of Wimberley. Originally called Liberty Hill, Driftwood was settled, by pioneers, as early as 1850. However, it didnt really become a town until more settlers arrived, and the town became a supply center for nearby communities in the 1880s. The town was rapid growth then, in that decade, and even got its own post office. The growth was probably because of the access it had to the newly created railway terminals at the nearby Buda/Kyle urban area. By the last decade of the century, Driftwood was a growing town with its own post office and school, cotton gin, general store, and churches. Everything changed in the opening years of the 20th century, when the depression almost killed the town, taking the population as low as ten by 1925. Although population growth picked up and approached 100 in mid 20th century, it dwindled again to less than twenty-five in 1990.

Driftwood Texas Area MapDriftwood is, and always has been, a quiet little place. More than a hundred years after it was founded, it still continued to be, more or less, just a crossroads, with a post office and a general store. In this part of the Texas hill country, there is not much recreational activity, but this onion creek locality is one of the most beautiful within the state. Rolling hills and tree covered verdant valleys, friendly people, and breath taking scenery, an easy going, laid back life, crystal water creeks, masses of wildflowers, warm days, and cool nights with millions of stars, are just some of the charms of this little corner of the Texas Hill Country. This small town is rich in history, and has become a well balanced mixture of urban amenities and historical sites. With urban centers like Dripping Springs only 15 minutes, and Austin and San Marcos quite close as well, there is plenty of both entertainment and mod cons. From grocery stores, and retail shops, to dry cleaners, from golf to boutiques, and a lot of outdoor relaxation options, life is good. Residents swear by the peace and quiet, and the school district is designated Exemplary.

Modern Driftwood has developed a name for itself in offering venues and facilities for all kinds of social and business occasions. Weddings, club retreats, important conferences or fun parties, whatever you are planning, the town has some way of making it happen in style. There are well known wine tastings as well, and the fairly well known Salt Lick Bar-b-cue restaurant. Wimberley, Kyle, Austin, are all short drives from the town, and the Hill Country Galleria, and the Barton Creek Mall are less than 20 minutes away. If you are looking for recreation, head out to Lake Travis, and emergencies are efficiently handled at the Seton Medical Center. Driftwood today has a number of master-planned communities, and smaller developments are coming up fast in this beautiful Texas Hill Country area. The many vineyards, olive orchards, and the tranquility of living make this the perfect country retreat. People seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life, or to raise a family in a place where values still matter and crime is close to nonexistent, seek out this wonderful town. Retirees can also find the perfect place here, to pass the golden years of their life in safety and comfort.
