Cypress Facts, History, and Local Events
Cypress is one of the cities in Texas that is not incorporated. However, for the sake of census activities, it is usually mashed up with a community in Houston known as Fairbanks and the resulting name is Cy-Fair which is used to nickname events, sports games and many other informal factors of this Harris County area. It is not in the jurisdiction borders of Houston.
The Cypress, Texas history is also one of great interest. It was inhabited by a group of native Indian tribe known as the Atakapan. However, they moved out in masses when, in the 1840’s, German settlers came to this place. The German history can be seen in the naming of some streets with examples like Tegle and Huffmeister. There was an army superior known as General Sam Houston who set up shop with his Texas Army in this area in about 1836 when there was a war known as the Battle of San Jacinto. Cypress, Harris County did not become urbanized until the 1980’s. This was brought about by constructions of a number of communities that still thrive there to this day. The alternative name of Cypress, Cy-Fair came to be after the fire departments from both sides used to come together and would appropriately name themselves the Cypress-Fairbanks Volunteer Fire Department, which went by the fond name, Cy-Fair VFD. A non-profit group is seeking to study, master and collect the necessary artifacts and documents that will put Cypress on the map and also to understand its history. This group is known as the Cypress Historical Society.
Cypress, Texas is a city that is located between the Cypress Watershed and the Cypress Creek. It is situated in a place convenient to gain access to the main American highways like Highway 290 and State highway 249. The laws that govern this small community are Precincts 3 and 4 of Harris County which are technically split by the Creek. Cypress is also home to Northwest Forest Conference center which is said to be equivalent in size to the Alamo, which means it stand on about 320,000 square meters of prime land. Tin Hall is a dance hall that has been around since 1889 and it is the oldest running one in Texas. For those that love sports, there is a multi-functional complex known as the Berry Center which comprises of a basketball court, football stadium and also meeting and conference facilities like a multimedia production area. Cypress, Harris County may be small, but it is full of possibilities and opportunities for Texans and others as a whole.
