The United States government owns the Canyon Lake project which is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers of the Fort Worth District. The construction of the Canyon Lake Dam began in 1958, and water impoundment in 1964. The conservation pool reached the proper level by 1968. Although some farm lands and communities were lost in the construction of both the dam and the reservoir, it has proved to be one of the most important developments in the County. The subsequent growth, resulting from the dam and the lake, of the surrounding areas, has transformed 20th and 21st century Comal county economy. This area of the county has become a great tourist draw, and one of the largest population centers in the state. Its resort and tourist industry has outstripped the importance of agriculture or manufacturing in the economy of Comal County. Once regular floods were controlled, it also became possible to develop the land along the shore of the lake, and all of the downstream area. By 1967 forty-six new subdivisions grew on Canyon Lake shores and fourteen began in the surrounding hills. By the time the 1980s were half gone, as many as eighty new neighborhoods were built in the area. These new residents, along with the thousands of tourists who flocked to the lake, caused and supported a range of new services and businesses and soon transformed the little rural settlements that surrounded the lake into thriving urban and commercial centers.
