Buda Facts, History, and Local Events

Buda, Texas is 17 miles to the south of the city of Austin, located on the Interstate 35 Highway in Hays County. Although it is, today, among the most rapidly growing communities within the state of Texas, Buda has managed to hold on to its small town peace and charm. Located close to major urban areas like San Antonio and Austin, Buda still continues to be a charming bedroom community, providing access to all the metropolitan amenities and opportunities, while allowing residents to live amidst rural friendliness and relaxation. The city borders on to Kyle, Texas, and although both are separately incorporated cities in their own right, locals tend to call them by the hybrid name of Buda/Kyle.

Buda Texas Area MapThe charming, small town quality of life is perfectly balanced by the proximity of downtown Austin a fifteen minute drive away. Buda has gained a reputation as a good place to bring up a family, live, and work, or to visit. The tranquility of a small town home a vibrant historical heritage, planned and guided growth, and urban advantages combine to make Buda quite an amazing place. Try antique shopping downtown, in the historical original buildings, enjoy the high quality of suburban life, experience, first hand, Budas community spirit, its annual festivals and the friendly people, to know what the best of both worlds truly means.

The area was originally a Mexican land grant, to Stephen B. von Eggleston, and was settled by Phillip J. Allen around 1846. Formally established in 1881, Buda originated with a donation of land, by Cornelia Trimble, for a town site. The idea was to have a railroad depot of the International-Great Northern Railroad. Although the first population center in the area was Mountain City, residents as well as businesses soon migrated to the new depot, which came to be called Du Pre. The post office department, 1887, requested a change of name, as another city in the state was already called Du Pre. This is when Buda came to be called Buda. Providing services and various supplies to the surrounding areas, dairy farms, and the ranches formed the base of the local economy, and everything from mills, lumberyards, hotels, and banks, newspapers, cheese factories, and more, appeared in the community at various times.

By 1928, local businesses had a Chamber of Commerce, and the city was a thriving commercial center with a population of around 600. The Great Depression hit Buda hard, and by 1933 the population was hardly 300 as people left in search of jobs and a livelihood. Buda was incorporated in 1948. In the middle of the 1980s, Austin began to burgeon, affecting Buda as well. Population grew again, and the town had a cement plant, a few craft industries, etc at that point, although the community continued to be residential, and primarily rural. By 1990, population was close to 2,000, and Buda has kept pace with Austin's development since then. A major development in recent times was the opening of the huge outdoor store called Cabela's in 2005, making Buda into a popular tourist and retail destination. Dozens of new retail stores, hotels, restaurants and movie theatres are planned.

Public school education in Buda is under the Hays Consolidated Independent School District, and the various private schools include the Santa Cruz Catholic School, the Hill Country Christian School, the San Marcos Baptist Academy, and the Wonderland School. There are a number of colleges and universities within easy reach, including the Austin Community College, the Texas State University, the Huston-Tillotson College, the St Edwards university, etc, and several Austin campuses of major universities like Concordia and Park. Things to do and see in the area include the Historic Downtown Buda and Main Street, Antique Row, Carrington House and Buda Park, the Old Stagecoach Property and the original Post Office, the Jardine Foods tasting room, and Cabelas.
