Wake Forest Quick FactsAbout 25 miles northeast of Raleigh in Wake and Franklin counties, the city of Wake Forest, North Carolina, is home to a quickly expanding population right now at around a little over 20,000. The town experienced a nearly 75 percent increase in its population between 2000 and 2006 and is expected to continue climbing. The city should not be confused with the school, Wake Forest University, that bears its name. The university was located here when it was originally established, and on through the 1950s until it was relocated to Winston-Salem in 1956. The school's beginnings are still commemorated in Wake Forest at the Wake Forest College Birthplace, also known as the Calvin Jones Historical House. This building was the home of the university's first president and contains many historical artifacts related to the institution's founding and early days. Wake Forest is now home to the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The Wake County Public School System operates public education operations here, which include there elementary, two middle schools and one high school. A public K-12 charter school and about half a dozen private schools are also run in the city. Recreational spots include Paschal Golf Club and Wake Forest Country Club, the DuBois Center community center and a branch of the Wake County Public Library System. Parks include the Falls Lake State Recreation Area, home to the 12,000-acre Falls Lake and 26,000 acres of woodlands. Triangle Transit Authority runs a bus public transit service throughout the region, which connect to other routes in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. |
