The county seat of Durham County, with which it shares its name, the city of Durham, North Carolina, is the fifth-largest city in the state. Portions of it extend into Orange and Wake counties, and the city is home to a population of more than 215,000. The city is best known throughout the country as the home to Duke University, a world-renowned major research university with some of the best medical treatment in the country at Duke University Medical Center and is also widely known for its hugely successful NCAA basketball team. It is also one of the points on the so-called Research Triangle, along with Raleigh and Chapel Hill. There are more than 300 health-related companies in the city. Besides Duke, however, the city is also home to North Carolina Central University and Durham Technical Community College.

Schools for younger students are run by the Durham Public Schools system, which operates 45 institutions and the state's residential high school, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. A local bus system provides routes around town, and Triangle Transit Authority also offers bus routes that connect with neighboring cities Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Amtrak connections can also be made here. Two golf courses, more than 300 restaurants and 40 annual festivals are found in Durham. A minor league baseball team, the Durham Bulls, play here. Artistic endeavors include the the Carolina Theatre, which is the host of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the American Dance Festival, held during the summer at Duke, and the Nasher Museum of Art.
