Chapel Hill Quick Facts

Home to a population of around 55,000 in Durham and Orange counties, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is a nationally recognized city as the home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the oldest state-supported university in the U.S. The city is the anchor of one of the three corners to the so-called Research Triangle, along with Durham and Raleigh, named as such for Research Triangle Park, a research area between Durham and Raleigh. The city enjoys a number of benefits from having UNC within its confines, such as its Ackland Art Museum and the draw from ts college basketball program, one of the most successful NCAA programs in the nation. This history is celebrated through the Carolina Basketball Museum. Public K-12 schools in the area are administered by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools system, and include 10 elementary, four middle and three high schools. UNC's hospital provides medical services and treatment to residents of the region and is a major employer.

Technology companies USAT Corp and Realtime Ops are headquartered here, and the insurance provider Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina has a large regional center. UNC's music school puts on a number of performances throughout the year that residents may enjoy, such as the William S. Newman Artists Music Series, featuring instrumental and vocal musicians from around the world, and the Carolina Jazz Festival. Events held annually in the city include a large Halloween street party, which usually brings in an attendance of more than 70,000, Earth Action Day, Locally Grown and Festifall. Other attractions include the Lincoln Gymnasium & Arts Center, Morehead Planetarium & Science Center, the Chapel Hill Museum, Finley Golf Course and the Kidzu Children’s Museum.
