Located in the central part of the state, just 15 miles west of Raleigh, the city of Apex, North Carolina, is home to a population just over 20,000. The city is a suburb of Raleigh-Durham in southwestern Wake County. It was incorporated in 1873 and its name comes from its being the highest point on a railroad between Richmond, Virginia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Wake County Public School System operates the educational institutions in the town, comprising four elementary schools, three junior highs and one high school. The town's location among the "Triangle" region of North Carolina puts its residents within easy distance of a number of colleges and universities, from smaller community colleges to world-renowned institutions. There are 11 four-year schools within 30 miles and another five junior or community colleges in 30 miles.

For transportation outside of the city, the Raleigh-Durham International Airport is just north off I-40. Locally, the Triangle Transit Authority operates buses throughout the area, offering connections to other bus systems in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Events celebrated in Apex include a Christmas parade, the Olde Fashioned 4th of July celebration, a Peak Fest and the annual Turkey Trot 5K. Apex's restored downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been restored in recent years to its old beauty. Attractions in Apex include Knights Play Golf Course, New Hope Valley Railway train ride and museum, and Apex Community Park. Concerts are held near the Apex Train Depot during the warmer months of the year, and about half a dozen shopping centers in town provide a number of retail opportunities.
