San Juan County is located in New Mexico and it is a unique piece of American heritage because it borders Utah, Arizona and Colorado thanks to its strategic place at the border of its state. There are a number of counties rich in history, scenery and culture that are near San Juan. These include Apache, Montezuma, La Plata and Archuleta. San Juan"s seat is Aztec city. The other two cities in San Juan are Farmington and Bloomfield. It is said that San Juan is pert of the "Four Corners" section of this part of the country. There is even a monument erected with San Juan having a piece of this geographic recognition.
San Juan County is home to over 113,801 people with 21 people residing per square kilometer of this county"s 14,344 square kilometers. About 0.44% of this land is occupied by water due to rivers and lakes. It is home to a number of Indian Reservations that are used to protect the indigenous people of the land. These actually take up about 63% of the land. The largest one that covers about 60% is Navajo nation or Navajo Indian Reservation. It covers a section of Arizona, Utah and northwestern New Mexico. There are over 173,000 Navajo citizens and this covers about 54% of the total population of known Navajos.
There are a number of sites and locations of great note in San Juan County, New Mexico. To begin with, there are 3 rivers that feed through the Navajo and Jicarilla Reservations. These are San Juan, La Plata and Animas. These are responsible for a number of sporting and holiday activities that locals and tourists can enjoy. One can kayak, canoe, hike, swim, and wind surf, water ski and many other activities that can cool you down on a hot desert day in San Juan. One of the major sports that people try out here is golf. The most famous golf course in this are is Riverview which is located off Highway 64. This golf course is fascinating because it is open all year round and is set in a desert setting.
There are a number of locations that one can visit in San Juan County, New Mexico where you will be able to enjoy yourself while marveling at nature"s beauty. One of the most famous of them is the Aztec Ruins which are a reminder of the roots of these heavily traditional indigenous people. These ruins were initially abandoned up to the 1200"s and then reoccupied. However, after a century, people began leaving the land and it has never been established why this mega migration took place. You can also visit the Chaco Canyon National Park, Mesa Verde National Park and also the Salmon Ruins. Salmon Ruins got its name from a settler whose family protected the ruins since the 1800"s and his name was George Salmon. Up to date, his home is still standing right next to the ruins. It was initially inhabited and then abandoned between the year 1130 and year 1185 before being reoccupied a little later. For those that feel they want to leave with a piece of San Juan County, then there is a large shopping area which is said to spread over 150 miles in radius and it is located in the largest city in the county which is Farmington.
