Aztec Facts, History, and Local Events

Almost each city located in San Juan County has a well-known name (the one found on maps) and also a Navajo name that it was given by the indigenous people of this area. The Navajo name for Aztec city is Kinteel and it is the county seat for San Juan. This is a city full of culture, history and heritage that anyone would be in awe when visiting as a local or even as a tourist.

Aztec, New Mexico Area MapAztec, New Mexico is a city that covers about 25.4 square kilometers with about 0.82% of it being water masses like rivers and lakes. This city is so far recorded to occupy about 6,378 people with about 26% being under the age of 18 and 13% being people of the retirement age of 65 and over. The city was founded in the year 1890 and was occupied by Pueblo natives. This area is said to thrive thanks to the bumper tourism trade that takes place here thanks to the Aztec Ruins National Monument along with other sites that embrace this areas history well.

Aztec, San Juan County is better known for its historical tours more than anything else. To begin with, you can visit the Aztec Ruins National Monument which was erected in 1923 and has a number of exhibitions from the Pueblo inhabitants that roamed that area between years 1100 and 1200. This is a site of such great importance that it registers at least 45,000 visitors on an annual basis. This site is such a vital piece of history that in 1983 was turned into a UNESCO world heritage site which means it is protected by an international body. It is also an integral piece in the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, something that took place around the year 1987. It is not located far from another set of ruins that San Juan County is known for; the Salmon Ruins.

If you would like to visit a museum that shows the history of Aztec, San Juan County is the Aztec Museum and Pioneer Park which attracts an average of 6,000 visitors annually. Some of the exhibits that one can enjoy are an oil field exhibition as well as a Pioneer Room that will document photographs of all 78 buildings in the Aztec area. You can also see Indian exhibitions, old telephone paraphernalia, a historic barbershop and also traditional farming equipment used thanks to the main exhibition building. The Pioneer Village is the one place that one can relive that era when Aztec was occupied by its original habitants. It is usually visited by many tourists and is even used to host weddings and other memorable occasions. You can enjoy this whole Aztec Museum experience through a biking or walking tour that is organized by the establishment.

There is a historic tour that one can take of the Chamber of Commerce, office buildings, general stores, bank building, old city hall, jewelry stores and many other premises where you can do some memorable shopping for your and your people. Along with the tour, you can enjoy a number of events held in Aztec, New Mexico. These include Oktoberfest, UFO Symposium that honors the alleged 1945 UFO crash, Aztec Founders Day, Fantasy of Lights and many others that are usually held at various times of the year.
