Summerlin Facts, History, and Local Events

Summerlin, Nevada, is a superb master planned community located in Clark County. Located close to the Spring Mountains as well as the Red Rock Canyon Area, the community sprawls across Las Vegas city limits and spreads into the unincorporated Clark County area nearby. It ranks among the best selling master planned communities in USA. With a current population around the 100,000 mark, this master planned community is almost perfect for a good life. It has consistently offered its residents a superior quality of life with a lifestyle, and amenities which are unmatched in the state of Nevada. Summerlin is spread over 22,500 acres and has over 150 miles of trails, over a hundred parks, tree-lined double streets, and street lamps which cut ambient light interference allowing residents to see the night sky.

A backdrop of soaring mountains and European cityscapes, Summerlin also offers some of the best, and widest, educational choices of any Las Vegas area community. The planners have left ample room for room in Summerlin. Open areas and green spaces abound, and are a major part of the attraction the community holds for residents. It is nature and eco friendly in other ways too. Most major streets have bicycle lanes for the dozens of local and visiting cyclists who make their daily way around the community and through it into the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Almost all the neighborhoods have parks maintained by the community, and larger community parks serve all residents and provide a wide range of recreational opportunities and amenities. The community also has an extensive system of trails which is planned to be 200 miles long upon completion. It is slated to have connections to 2,000 miles of the other regional trails.

The superior educational opportunities in Summerlin are provided by the twelve public schools, more than a dozen private schools, and more. In fact, almost all the best private schools in the Las Vegas area have Summerlin campuses, and four higher learning institutes have their presence within the community including Le Cordon Bleu, Las Vegas. Culture is an important part of Summerlin life as well. There are regular performances around the year at the Donald W. Reynolds Cultural Center, Hills Center Amphitheater, and the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center. There is usually something to suit all tastes, from Jazz to ballet, Pop concerts to Plays. Other recreational opportunities in the community include world-class professional standard golf courses, over twenty yearly events, more than a hundred hobby and art classes and more. Convenience stores, world class shopping, fine and exotic dining and quality resorts. Golf is another major aspect of Summerlin life, and the community offers a selection of nine premier golf courses. Stunning natural views and the sole two courses hosting the Tournament Players Club in the state are only some of the international golfing opportunities that Summerlin offers.

Howard Hughes, Jr. bought 25,000 acres of land in Southern Nevada, near Las Vegas, in the mid 1950s. Later, in 1988, the Summa Corporation, set up to oversee his holdings and business interests after his death, exchanged some 5,000 acres of the land (close to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area) and took over 3,000 acres just south of current day Summerlin. Construction of the community began in 1990, and today 19 out of the 30 planned villages have either been completed or are being built.
