Las Vegas Facts, History, and Local Events

Las Vegas is best known to the world as "Sin City" and everybody knows that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. The reason for this is because of the casino, party and fast life that is Las Vegas. It is also the destination for quick and unique wedding ceremonies mostly presided over by Elvis Presley look-alikes. The 66 Degrees weather and many natural and man-made attractions make Vegas worth visiting at least once in your lifetime. This is truly a city with many sides.

Las Vegas is the seat of Clark County and what was once a stop over for pioneers as they travelled to the West soon became the dream retirement and family city. It was, until 1845, a part of Mexico before being annexed into the United States. It was also the first place that Mormonism or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which left Vegas around 1857. It was officially founded in 1905 and was part of Lincoln County before it was moved into the then new Clark County in 1908. It was officially christened a city in 1911. The reason why Las Vegas, Nevada became so industrialized and populated with about 567,000 people which shot up to 1.9 million by 2009 is because of the building of Hoover Dam. Another interesting thing that brought people to Las Vegas was the largest reservoir and man-made lake known as Lake Mead.

Las Vegas, Nevada Area MapLas Vegas, Clark County is known for a number of things. To begin with, it was a hub of organized crime or the Mafia in the 1940"s with one of the most noted bosses being Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. The casinos and massive hotels are another thing that is synonymous with Las Vegas. It is said that there are about 209,000 gambling slots all over Vegas that actually run all day and night throughout the year. The institution of marriage is considered sacred in many parts of the world, America included. However, gone are the days that one would take months or even years planning a large church and garden wedding. It has been possible, for a long time, to simply get married in any one of the chapels located all over Las Vegas. You will get the setting of your choice, the "celebrity" of your choice to preside over the ceremony (Elvis is the most popular choice for many) and anything else that the rush plan would require. About 110,000 legit marriage certificates are issued in Las Vegas, Nevada annually. One of the most famous Las Vegas weddings is by pop icon, Britney Spears who married her high school boyfriend. However, this wedded bliss lasted for only a day.

Some of the things that one can undertake while in Vegas are to visit the Strip where you will see miniature versions of famous world landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, The Statue of Liberty, Big Ben and many others. You will also be able to visit the many famous shows held there like the Siegfried and Roy Tiger show, Celine Dion concerts, dance group Jabbawockeez MGM shows, the Cirque du Soleil and many other cabaret and burlesque shows held here. Thanks to businessmen like Howard Hughes, many people have started multi-million businesses that rake in millions of dollars annually.
