The growth of Henderson began in the 1940's, when it supplied the US with magnesium, for World War II. It was incorporated in 1953, although it originally encompassed an area of only 13 square miles, Henderson quickly flourished and grew to the 94 square miles it is today. The community however, continues to cherish and enjoy the small town values that founded it, perfectly balancing them with big city efficiency and convenience. Numerous major shopping malls, movie complexes, eateries and casino resorts have sprung up to provide residents and visitors with leisure activities. Long standing interest in the arts and culture, and city support for such programs led to the creation of the largest recreational facility in Nevada - the Multigenerational Facility, annual cultural events, and the largest outdoor amphitheater in the state.

Although Henderson's first business was supplying magnesium for the war effort through the Basic Magnesium Plant, the plant closed in 1946, and most subsidiary businesses left the area. In 1947, it was decided to reopen the magnesium manufacturing plant as a state-supported business, and the Colorado River Commission purchased the plants. Multiple explosions at the PEPCON rocket fuel factory in 1988 killed two people. This event played a major role in changing Henderson from an industrial city and transformed it into an office and residential city. Located a short distance from McCarran International Airport and Henderson Executive Airport, Henderson is easy to get in and out of. The RTC Transit and its network of bus routes serves the city and connects it to points throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Four major highways - the State Route 582, State Route 564, Interstate 215 and Interstate 515—run through Henderson. In addition, the Union Pacific Railroad connects to Henderson via a branch line.

Henderson education is part of the Clark County School District, for elementary and secondary public education, with 29 elementary schools, and nine middle and high schools. Colleges and universities include the Nevada campus of the National University, the Nevada State College, the University of Southern Nevada, the College of Southern Nevada, and Touro University Nevada as well as some for-profit colleges. Henderson today is a massive residential town with businesses, and attractions to amply accommodate its residents. In spite of the recent worldwide economic crisis, the future looks bright for this balanced community.
