The history of the City of Henderson begins during the 1940s, when it became a center for magnesium production for the Second World War. The Basic Magnesium Plant in Henderson supplied the magnesium for various incendiary munitions and for airplane engines and parts. However, when the war ended, by 1947, magnesium production became unnecessary for national defense, causing the plant to cut back, and resulting in most of its employees moving away. More than half the houses in the town site became vacant as workers left, and by 1947, Henderson was up for sale as part of the war surplus properties around the nation. The Nevada Legislature, deciding to make an effort to save the city if possible, evaluated the possibility of the Basic Magnesium plant being administered by the state. Soon the Colorado River Commission was given the authority to buy the plants, saving Henderson from being sold as war surplus.
