Fishers Facts, History, and Local Events

Fishers is a rapidly growing town located in southeast Hamilton County, just twenty miles to the northeast of Indianapolis. Fishers is conveniently located, a suburban town with a range of things for both residents and visitors to enjoy. Although it began as a modest railroad town, it has metamorphosed into an upscale and lively city. This modern town has a rich American history, and has recently seen economic and community growth of quite amazing proportions. One of the fastest growing communities in the US, it was named one of the best places to live, in 2008, for the fourth time, by Money Magazine. This fast-growing suburb of Indianapolis was also named the best affordable American suburb, in 2010, by BusinessWeek. In the 2010 list of best places to live, by Money Magazine, Fishers ranked eighth. In spite of its remarkable expansion, Fishers is known for its family living, and has some great shops, year round entertainment, annual events, good schools, and more to offer residents.

Fishers, Indiana Area MapNot surprisingly, hundreds of new residents arrive to make Fishers home, every year. The welcoming atmosphere of the town combines with proximity to good schools, exemplary health care, shopping, commercial centers, and more, which, in combination with the top-notch government services makes it attractive as a place to live and work. Fishers is well connected too, with three exits off the I-69, and easy access to the I-465 and the I-69, making it a great place to live, commute from, or start a business. Both the Metropolitan Airport and the Indianapolis International Airport are close by, and major urban centers like Louisville, Cincinnati, and Chicago within easy driving distance on the interstate roadways. New business development is a major focus, as the town intends to continue growing in a balanced, sustainable community.

The aim is to provide diverse employment opportunities and a better quality of life to all residents. New developments in insurance, finance, and real estate sectors are planned, and the medical industry and the life sciences are being encouraged through a planned Research and Technology Campus. As more and more companies seek expansion in the Central Indiana area, Fishers aims to attract employers and skilled workers through its quality of life, new housing developments, entertainment venues, and high ranked educational institutions.

The Fishers area has a rich history. Originally settled by William Conner as a trading post in 1802, the settlement was called Mudsock. The fortunes of the community changed with the arrival of the railroad, and like many new communities in the area, a large settlement developed and the name changed to Fishers station, and ten Fishers switch, in reference to the railroad station here. In 1872 Salathiel Fisher divided the land into smaller town lots, and when the first post office was opened, the same year, the rest of the name was dropped. The town became known officially as Fishers in 1908. Today, over a hundred years later, Fishers is a thriving community and the rapidly growing population has created similar growth education, commerce, and entertainment.

From seven schools, a decade and a half ago, to eighteen now, is a small example of how fast Fishers has grown. The increase in population and the contingent increase in demand for entertainment has led to the beginnings of community theater, family owned mini-golf, arcades, bowling, the Pinheads Entertainment Complex, and numerous well known restaurants like the Nickel Plate Bar & Grill, Casler's Kitchen and Bar, The Ram, etc. There are popular nightlife venues and live music spots like the Britton Tavern and a growing number of great hotels to accommodate all the visitors. The nearby Geist Reservoir offers fishing, and water activities like waterskiing. The city also hosts the Indiana State Fair Train and the Fishers Freedom Festival.
