The Village of Arlington Heights is situated in northwestern Cook County, Illinois, a very short distance from the attractions of the Chicago metropolitan area, and is home to over 75,000 people. It is a charming little city area perfect for families because it has excellent schools. It is ideal for people looking to relocate as it has a thriving business district, and is close enough, and well connected enough, to the windy city for a commute to be feasible. It also offers cultural attractions and recreational opportunities enough to make it an ideal family-oriented community very close to the excitement of Chicago.
The history of today's Arlington Heights begins as early as 1835, when The General Land Office started selling the land. In mid-19th century, William Dunton founded a Dunton town, which went on to become what the city is today. The town grew slowly at first, until - in the 1940's, an influx from Saxony, of German farmers, gave it a first spurt of growth. By the end of the century, the area was a farming center and supplied vegetables and dairy products to Chicago. Arlington Heights was incorporated in 1887, with a population of about a 1,000, mostly farmers. Soon, people working in Chicago began settling here, making it a commuter suburb. The 1950's and 1960's, saw a spurt in population when cars became more common, and the Chicago-area economy expanded manifold, driving the population of commuters up sharply.
Business has boomed recently, and developments with it, with condominiums, restaurants and businesses appearing and growing. The Central Business District has seen much growth, in spite of land and space being limited. Arlington Heights prospers, partly because of its proximity and connectedness to Chicago. Two stations, for Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line and Metra North Central Line connect the area conveniently with the outside, as do the Interstate 90 and Illinois 53 which run along two of its edges. This provides easy access to the O'Hare International Airport as well, apart from the city of Chicago, and the other suburbs.
