Waimea Hawaii Quick Facts

A town of more than 7,000 residents on the north-central part of the Big Island, Waimea, Hawaii, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island. It is a thriving town where the population has quadrupled over the past two decades. The town is also sometimes called Kamuela or Waimea-Kamuela to differentiate it from other 'Waimeas' on the other Hawaiian islands. It is the home of the Waimea-Kohala Airport, ensuring easy access in and out of the city. The town derives its name from the Hawaiian word meaning "reddish water," referring to the tinted waters' glint as they are seen after filtering through the forest in the Kohala Mountains.

Waimea is home to seven schools, seven world-class hotels, nine golf courses, two major telescope facilities, Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, more than a dozen religious groups, and the North Hawaii Community hospital and Lucy Henriques Medical Center. There are three shopping centers, Waimea Park, the Kahilu Theater and about half a dozen art galleries. The town is home to Parker Ranch, the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the country, has several ranches and farms for horseback riding, and fittingly is host to an annual Fourth of July rodeo.
