Wailea, Hawaii, is located on the southwestern side of island of Maui, at the base of a dormant volcano, across from Kahoolawe Island along the Alalakeiki Channel and on Makena Bay. It is home to a population of about 6,000 when combined with nearby Makena, which is done for census purposes. It is largely a resort town, with tourism, including accommodation and food services, employing around one-quarter of the town's population, many in some of the resorts such as Grand Wailea Resort, the Four Seasons Resort Maui, the Fairmont Kea Lani, the Renaissance Beach Resort and the Wailea Marriott Resort. The Wailea Golf Club, with three par-72 courses, is found here and is home to the annual Champions Skins Game each February. Additionally, Makena Golf Club just down the road.
Wailea is home to the Wailea Shopping Village and Rainbow Mall, and shoppers will find a number of upscale boutiques here, with stores like Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Fendi and Gucci. There are a plethora of beaches for visitors and residents to enjoy: Keawakapu Beach, Ulua and Mokapu Beaches, Wailea Beach, Polo Beach, Palauea Beach, Makena Landing, Maluaka Beach, Oneuli Beach, Makena Beach and Little Beach. Whale watching is popular here, as are luaus and snorkeling along the Molokini Crater. The Wailea Tennis Club is top-notch among the country, and each June, the town is host to the Maui Film Festival.
