Home to almost 1,500 residents, Poipu, Hawaii, is located on the southern shores of Kauai. It is a quaint small town, where residents and visitors can enjoy their tropical surroundings without being overwhelmed with too many tourists. Golfers can take their pick from two courses here, Poipu Bay Resort Golf Course and Kiahuna Golf Club. Those who enjoy hiking or running can take a trip down the Koloa Heritage Trail, a 10-mile trail that includes 14 stops and monuments of historical significance to the island. Poipu is host of the annual Hawaiiana/Malama Ola Festival, and home to Kauai Coffee Co. The National Tropical Botanical Garden runs through the town.

Poipu is also near Spouting Horn State Park -- a park where water bursts from under a lava shelf straight up into the air with each wave. Spurts regularly reach as high as 50 feet in the air, and can appear multi-colored at sunset. There are a number of local boutiques, galleries and shops to peruse, or have a visit to the Poipu Shopping Village Shopping Center. Two parks: Prince Kuhio Park, Poipu Beach Park, and three beaches: Po‘ipu Beach, Shipwreck Beach, Brennecke Beach are found in the town. A third of the population employed in the tourism sector here, and the closest hospital and airport are about nine miles away in Lihue.
