Makena Hawaii Quick Facts

Located on the southwestern side of island of Maui, along the Alalakeiki Channel, across from Kahoolawe Island and on Makena Bay, Makena, Hawaii, is a pleasant old fishing community. When combined with nearby Wailea, which is done for census purposes, the town has a population of about 6,000. Tourism, including accommodation and food services, is the largest industry here, and employs around one-quarter of the town's population. There are seven beaches here to enjoy: Oneuli Beach, Keawakapu Beach, Po'olenalena Beach, Ulua Beach, Wailea Beach, Mokapu Beach and Maluaka Beach.

The nearest hospital is about eight miles away in Kula, and the nearest colleges are in Honolulu. The town is home to Makena Golf Club, with Wailea Golf Club in addition just down the road. Makena State Park is located right on the shores of the ocean, and those interested in retail can check out the Wailea Shopping Village Shopping Center. There is still cattle raised on the Ulapalakua Ranch, and Makena Stables offers horseback riding opportunities. There are tennis courts aplenty, and trails wind through the Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve.
