The county seat of the county/island of Kauai, Lihue, Hawaii, is the second largest town on the island with a population of almost 6,000 on the southeastern shores of the island. It is home to Lihue Airport, the island's only airport, and at Nawiliwili Bay, where other forms of transportation dock. As county seat, Lihue is home to the county administration building. It also houses the island's largest shopping center, Kukui Grove Center, home of Kauai's only big department store. There are several other large retails stores here, including K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Costco. Lihue is home to Kauai Community College, part of the University of Hawaii system.

The grade-school education institutions here include Wilcox Elementary School and Kaumualii Elementary School, Kamakahelei Middle School and Kauai High School, as well as Island School, a private pre-school through 12th grade school. Wilcox Memorial Hospital operates here, providing residents with all their medical care needs. Learn about the history of the island at Kauai Museum, or visit Grove Farm Homestead Museum, the former home of George N. Wilcox, a sugar plantation owner, and now a museum that provides a peek at how plantations looked and operated over 100 years ago.
