Lanikai Hawaii Quick Facts
On the Kailua Bay on the eastern side of the island of Oahu, Lanikai, Hawaii, is a residential area about twenty minutes from the Honolulu airport and Wakiki. The area sits on a reef-protected bay and, when combined with the statistics of Kailua, has a population of more than 50,000 residents. The name "Lanikai" means "heavenly sea" in the Hawaiian language, and it's easy to see why the region dervied such a name. Many claim Lanikai has the best beaches in Hawaii, with its clean, white sands, clear water, palm trees and surf-free water. The two Mokulua Islands can be seen in the distance from Lanikai's beaches, less than a mile in distance and just a short kayak away. The islands are both noted bird sanctuaries.
The beaches are a popular destination for sailing and windsurfing, as well as for portraits or photos seeking a picturesque backdrop. The area is about 15 miles from capital-city Honolulu, and is near the Kaneohe Marine Base Hawaii, a large employer. Kailua Beach Park, Enchanted Lake Park, Kaelepula Pond and the large Kawainui Regional Park are all within minutes. Golfers can enjoy themselves at Mid-Pacific Country Club, while the nearby Castle Medical Center serves the area's medical needs.
