Along the northwest shores of the island of Maui in the Auau Channel facing Lanai island, Lahaina, Hawaii, is one of the largest towns on the island and the biggest town on the western portion of Maui, with a population of just under 10,000, but which can reach as high as 40,000 during popular tourist seasons. It is a former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and was a major whaling port city in the 19th century. Today it is home to the Lahaina Cannery Mall and Lahaina Center, and is possibly most well known as the home of the Maui Invitational, held each fall around Thanksgiving, when a number of high-profile NCAA basketball teams come to the island to play in a pre-season tournament. Just up the road, The Plantation Course at Kapalua hosts the PGA Tour's Mercedes-Benz Championship each January, and Lahaina is home to a major local Halloween celebration each year, with as many as 20,000 in attendance.
Lahaina is the spot of the finish of the Vic-Maui Yacht Race, a large offshore sailboat race that begins in British Columbia, Canada. There are other celebrations throughout the year, like the Chinese New Year Celebration, Ocean Arts Festival, and Banyan Tree Birthday Party, which celebrates the giant tree in the middle of town. Lahaina Harbor is the location for charter boats and the Lahaina-Lanai Ferry to Lanai island. There are walking tours of the city available, where visitors can spot such relics as the Old Fort Walls of Lahaina, Carthaginian Floating Museum, the Lahaina Lighthouse and the Lahaina Yacht Club.
