Located on the western side of the Big Island, the Kona, Hawaii, region is home to about 10,000 residents. The word "Kona" means "leeward" in Hawaiian, and the region was thus named for its location along the coast, stretching down the shoreline of Kailua Bay and up the slope of Hualalai volcano. It was first created by King Kamehameha I to be the government seat, and was for a while capital of the the Kingdom of Hawaii. The city is served by Kona International Airport, ensuring residents and visitors have easy access in and out of the island. Kona is home to Hulihee Palace, the royal palace of the Hawaiian monarchy until 1914. It is the site of a number of national events, like the annual Ironman Triathlon World Championship, the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament and the Mastercard Senior PGA Golf Tournament at Hualalai Resort.
Mokuaikaua Church, the state's first church, was built here in 1820. The area is known for its coffee, celebrated each year with the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival in November. Other annual events include the Queen Liliuokalani canoe races, the Kona Marathon, the Aloha Festivals in September, and the Kona Brewers Festival in March, and the Kona Chocolate Festival. The town is home to its own brewery, Kona Brewing Company. The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority is located on the coast, and those interested in learning more about the area's history can seek out the Kona Historical Society. The Society for Kona’s Education and Art and the Kona Arts Center celebrate and support culture and the arts here, and the beautiful weather and environment can be enjoyed at the Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens.
