Located just south of Kilihiwai Bay on the island of Kauai, Kilauea, Hawaii, is home to a population of a little more than 2,000 residents on the northern side of the island. Its name means "much spreading" in Hawaiian, and the town is just east of Princeville on Highway 56. Kilauea is home to the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and is spot where much guava is planted and grown, earning itself the nickname of guava capital of the world. Popular beaches in the area include Lumahai, Kalihiwai Bay Beach and Anini, offering plenty of opportunities for such activities as surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and diving.
The town's most famous landmark is the Kilauea Lighthouse, located on Kilauea Point, a remnant of a former volcanic vent. The lighthouse, which has not officially been in use since 1976, is 52 feet tall and lies at the northernmost point of all of Hawaii. Kilauea is also near the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, with more than 200 acres of land that birds like the Pacific golden plover, the Laysan albatross and the nene goose call home. Hawaiian monk seals, humpback whales and spinner dolphins can be viewed out at sea from the refuge.
