Kihei Hawaii Quick Facts

Located on the western shores of Maui island, Kihei, Hawaii, is a coastal town home to a population of almost 17,000. The town is a quiet enclave on the shores of Maalea Bay here, with a number of apartment and condominium complexes, and stretches along the bay for about seven miles. It is home to Elleair Maui Golf Club and Kamaole Beach Park, and is in an region of Hawaii that is generally hotter and more dry than the majority of the state. There are no fewer than ten shopping malls here in Kihei, including Azeka Place Shopping Center, Piilani Shopping Center and Kukui Mall, which includes a four-screen movie theater.

The main offices for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary are located here, as are seed operations run by Dekalb Genetics Corporation and Monsanto. The Maui Research and Technology Park, is located here too, and is home to the Maui High Performance Computing Center. Kihei is bordered by beaches and South Kihei Road on one side and by the newer Piilani Highway on the other side. It is home to three excellent beaches, Kamaole I, II and III. A skate park, baseball fields, basketball courts, a field hockey rink, a picnic area and a playground provide those here with outdoor areas in which to play and enjoy the temperate weather. At the north end of town the national Wildlife Conservation District, Kelia Pond, can be found. Also in town is the Kihei Canoe Club.
