Home to around 50,000 residents in the central part of the southwestern side of Oahu, Kapolei, Hawaii, is a relatively well-to-do community about 25 miles from Honolulu. It has a high home ownership rate, with around 70% of residents owning, and an average income well above the national average. The town is developed on what was once a largely agriculture area where pineapples and sugarcane were grown. The area is home to eight golf courses, including the championship Ko Olina Golf Club, Kapolei Golf Course and Barbers Point Golf Course. Four elementary, one middle and the Kapolei High School make up the public school system, as well as more than half a dozen private schools.
Residents and visitors can enjoy themselves at the Kapolei Regional Park, the Makakilo Recreation Center and cool off at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park. Barbers Point Naval Air Station is nearby, and a chunk of the population is employed there. Argosy University-Kapolei is located here, and the University of Hawaii-West Oahu, which is based in nearby Pearl City, plans to move to a new campus in Kapolei in 2009. The Hawaii Museum of Flying is in Kapolei, and medical services are offered at the St. Francis Medical Center-West. The town is host of the annual LPGA Fields Open, an Aloha Festival, the Taste at Kapolei, the Hawaii International Jazz Festival at Kapolei Hale, and the Boat Parade of Lights at Ko Olina Marina. A corn maze and pumpkin-picking can be found at various times throughout the year at Aloun Farms.
