Situated on the eastern side of Kauai on Route 56, Kapaa, Hawaii, is one of the largest cities on this island, with a population of more than 10,000, and growing. It is located just north of Wailua River State Park, less than 10 miles from nearby Lihue, home to the island's only airport. Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital here is a large employer in town, providing medical services to residents and visitors. The school system here includes Kapaa Elementary, Middle and High School, with more than 1,000 students enrolled in the high school. There is also a private K-8 school, St. Catherine's. A number of stores and shops can be found at Kapaa Shopping Center.

There are several municipal parks from which to enjoy the town's beautiful surroundings, including Town Park, Kapaa Beach Park, Kapaa New Park, Gore Park, Kapahi Park and Waipoli Park. The town is home to the Kauai Children's Discovery Museum, a popular place to take the kids year-round. Kappa's location puts it directly across from Oahu, just a boat ride away. Kapaa makes a great destination for visitors looking for an off-the-beaten-path Hawaiian destination. As a smaller town, its beaches are less crowded and open and quiet for true relaxation.
