Kailua Hawaii Quick Facts

Located on the southeastern shores of the island of Oahu and about 15 miles northeast of Honolulu, the city of Kailua, Hawaii, is home to more than 36,000 in this largely residential area across the island and over Nuuanu Pali, the tallest mountain peak in the Koolau mountain range, from the capital. The large Kawainui Regional Park is located just to the west of town and makes a perfect relaxation destination. Golfers can enjoy the Mid-Pacific Country Club. Kailua Beach Park and Kaelepulu Pond are two other natural attractions here. The town's beaches have consistently been ranked among some of the world's best beaches.

The area is primarily residential but a commercial district can be found along Kailua Road. Kailua is home to Lanikai Beach, Kawai Nui Marsh, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Castle Medical Center is the town's main hopsital, and nearly a quarter of the population here is employed in accommodation and food service industry. The area is a popular windsurfing destination because of the steady tradewinds, and celebrates Christmas and Fourth of July parades each year. The school system includes eight elementary schools, an intermediate school and two high schools, in addition to about half a dozen private schools.
