Kailua Kona Hawaii Quick Facts

A former fishing community and the old home of the state's royalty, Kailua, Hawaii, is located on the western side of the Big Island. The town is home to a population of about 10,000. It is situated near the Kona International Airport, giving visitors and residents quick and easy access in and out of the island. The town is often referred to as Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from the town of Kailua on the island of Oahu. The town is home to 10 elementary schools, including an academy and an all-girls school, one middle school and two high schools, Kailua High and Kalaheo High. Additionally, about half a dozen private schools operate in the town.

It is also home to a Youth With A Mission training centers, one of its largest and a campus of the University of the Nations. The Natural Energy Lab of Hawaii is found here as well. The town is a popuiar tourist destination, and many in the area are employed in this sector. Attractions here include Kailua Pier, the starting and ending point of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship; Hulihee Palace, the former residence of the Hawaiian royal family until 1914. The Kona Arts Center provides cultural attractions, while areas to enjoy include Kona Coast State Park, the Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Kahaluu Beach Park and Kailua Bay & Kamakahonu Beach.
