The capital city of Hawaii, Honolulu is home to more than 370,000 residents on the island of Oahu. Though the name Honolulu refers to the city area on the southeastern part of the island, it also can refer to the consolidated city and county of Honolulu, which make up the entire island of Oahu. The city's name means "sheltered bay" or "place of shelter." It is a popular tourist destination and houses a plethora of hotels, restaurants beaches and resorts. There are half a dozen hospitals and medical centers in the city, and a number of parks and golf courses. The city has public buses that can transport residents and visitors around, and is home to the Honolulu International Airport, the busiest airport in the state.

Honolulu is a cultural mecca, with many offerings for those who enjoy art, music and culture. Operating here are the Hawaii Opera Theatre, the Neal Blaisdell Center Concert Hall, the Waikiki Shell, the Hawaii Theatre, Diamond Head Theatre and the 100-plus-year-old Honolulu Symphony. Arts attractions include The Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Contemporary Museum, The Hawaii State Art Museum and the natural history Bishop Museum. Other popular attractions are the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium. The city is home to a number of botanical gardens. Honolulu is host each year of the NFL Pro Bowl and also hosts the Hawaii Winter League for minor-league baseball players. Runners can partake in events like the Great Aloha Run, the Honolulu Marathon and the Honolulu Triathlon. Three universities -- the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Chaminade University and Hawaii Pacific University -- are located here.
