Hilo, Hawaii, is the largest city on the Big Island and the second largest city in the state, with a population of more than 40,000. it is located on the Hilo Bay on the windward (eastern) side of the island, and has its own airport, the Hilo International Airport. It is the county seat of the island, and thus home to county, state, and federal offices. It is near two shield volcanoes, Mauna Loa, considered active, and Mauna Kea, dormant.
