Hanalei Hawaii Quick Facts
A town with a population of about 500, Hanalei is a small town on the northern shores of Kauai, just east of Na Pali Coast State Park. The town was the backdrop for the 1958 musical, "South Pacific," with scenes filmed here in the town and at a beach just west of town. Hanalei Elementary School is located in the community, while students attend middle and high school nearby. It is west of Princeville, with the closest hospital about 12 miles away in Kapaa. Construction, education and tourism, including accommodation and food services, are the biggest industries in town. A farmers markets is held in the town once a week.
The area is relatively easy to access, as the island's only airport is 20 miles away in Lihue. There are a number of parks for a town of its size, Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park, Hanalei Park, Hanalei Beach Park, Waioli Beach Park and Waioli Park. The valley where the town is situated is surrounded by mountains, and the area encompassing Hanalei is one mile wide and six miles long. The town is also home to the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge and Limahuli Garden.
