Captain Cook Hawaii Quick Facts

Located on the western side of the Big Island, the town of Captain Cook, Hawaii, is home to a population of just over 3,000 residents. Construction, agriculture, tourism and education are the largest industries in the region. The town is named after named after Captain James Cook, who discovered the Hawaiian islands. The closest medical center is Kona Commmunity Hospital, about 10 miles away. Captain Cook is about two and a half hours from Hilo, the largest city on the island. The town is located near the Kealakekua Bay, an area that offers some of the best snorkeling and Scuba diving in Hawaiii, because of its calm waters, large coral reef and vast array of sea creatures and fish, like Spinner dolphins and Hawaiian sea turtles.

There are two elementary schools in town, and students attend middle and high school in nearby Konawaena. The nearest college is the University of Hawaii at Hilo, at 45 miles away. The town offers Keopuka Square Shopping Center, where residents can find stores to meet all their needs. Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park is located on the bay. Attractions in town include the Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, Koa Coffee Plantation, Uchida Coffee Farm Museum, Rodney J. T. Yano Memorial Hall and Snorkel & Kayak Captain Cook Monument. The town has a few hotels and a number of bed and breakfasts, while Kona Country Club is nearby.
