Big Island Hawaii Quick FactsThe island of Hawaii, also called the Big Island to avoid confusion with the state itself, is the largest island in the U.S. in size and bigger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined. From its longest points, the island measures approximately 93 miles across. The island is created from five separate volcanoes, some of which are still active. The island is still growing, as volcano eruptions occur and add surface area to the island. The Big Island has a total population of around 175,000 residents. The economy is largely focused on tourism, though agriculture plays a big part too, with farms growing cattle, Macadamia nuts, papaya, flowers and coffee. Kau, Kapapala and Mauna Kea forest reserves are found on the Big Island. The island is home to three colleges: University of Hawaii at Hilo, University of the Nations and Hawaii Community College. Two airports offer visitors and residents options for flying in and out of the island, Hilo International Airport and Kona International Airport. Hilo is the county seat of the island, and other larger cities include Mountain View, Captain Cook, Holualoa, Pahoa, Volcano, Pahala and Honokaa. The area is an active one, with countless activities and festivals going on at any given time. The island is home to such attractions as the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, Onizuka Space Center, Rainbow Falls State Park and the Mauna Kea Observatory. Performing arts centers like the Kahilu Theatre Foundation and The Friends of the Palace Theater operate here. The island is full of festivals, including the Moku o Keawe International Hula Festival, the Big Island Fall Arts Festival Exhibit, the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival and the Hilo Chinese New Year Festival, just to name a few. There are plenty of golf tournaments, food and music fests, parades and so much more held around the island throughout the year. |
