West Palm Beach Facts, History, and Local Events

West Palm Beach, Florida is a name recognized world wide as one of the playgrounds of the rich and famous. It is a popular vacation and alternate home destination of the merely wealthy, as well as of royalty, and the hottest of celebrities. Also known simply as West Palm, the community is the largest city in Palm Beach County, the oldest incorporated municipality in all of South Florida, and has the highest number of people living in it in the state! Around 100,000 people call it home, and West Palm Beach is undoubtedly one of the principal cities in the area. With a rich pioneering history, great affluence, and glamour, West Palm Beach draws new residents with as much enthusiasm as it does the curious visitor. Year round cultural events, 47 golf courses, the highest number for any city in the United States, and much more, West Palm is a vacationers paradise.

The area was an uninhabitable swampland, and might have forever remained a wasteland, but history changed everything. Henry Flagler, the impossibly wealthy railway baron, turned the wasteland into a magic land of affluence with his vision and determination. He built Whitehall, in 1902, as a 60,000 square foot, 55 room, vacation house. The house is now the Flagler Museum, and had cost for million dollars at that point. It set the standard for the extravagances of all the other millionaires who followed Flagler into the area. They had money to burn, and their wealthy lifestyles have left an aura of fascination for future generations. Today, West Palm Beach continues to fascinate with its affluence, and exclusive European shops, world class international cuisine restaurants, antique shops, and art galleries.

In the 1920's, the population grew fourfold, seeing an unprecedented rush of developments, during the Florida land boom. Then came the fall, and nervous speculators began to sell out fast. The hurricanes in 1926 and 1928 didnt help matters much, and by the end of the decade, West Palm Beach property values and economy were at an all time low. When the second world war began, military dollars began flowing in, and veterans moving south at the end of the war found the city. Interrupted progress restarted, and soon the metropolitan area became the fourth fastest growing in the United States. 1966 saw the opening of the Palm Beach International Airport, connecting West palm to most areas in the US, growth has continued through the 20th and into the 21st Century. Although originally the home of the workers who built the mansions and hotels for the millionaire Henry Flagler, and his social circle, West Palm is today a city with everything. The downtown area offers entertainment, shopping, and great dining.

Before Miami was founded, West Palm Beach was the cultural center, and the rivalry of West Palm and Miami continued for many decades in the early 20th century. West Palm became a thriving population center and its rich heritage is very much alive today. In the recent past, major companies like IBM, Pratt & Whitney, RCA, and so on have done much for the continuing growth of the community. Today, West Palm Palm is a good, economically strong community to live in. The K-12 public education in the city is under the Palm Beach County School District, and post-secondary education is taken care of by Palm Beach Community College, and Palm Beach State College. The Palm Beach Atlantic University, Northwood University, Florida Culinary Institute, Lincoln College of Technology, and South University take care of other academic and educational needs.

For things to do in West Palm Beach, there is the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, a venue for performances in music, dance, theatre, and opera. The Norton Museum of Art is the largest in Florida. The Carefree Theatre showcases art house cinema shows as well as various alternative music performances. The SunFest a music, art, and waterfront festival and the Palm Beach International Film Festival, are both annual events of note, as is the National Horse Show – America's oldest. The Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction attracts droves of vintage car lovers.
