Wellington Facts, History, and Local Events

The village of Wellington, Florida, is in Palm Beach County, just fifteen minutes from the West Palm Beach Airport. Rated one of America's best small towns, among the top ten, by Money Magazine, it is an idyllic and complete community with much to offer residents as well as visitors. The weather is great, and international events like the Horse Show in November, and the Winter Equestrian Festival, make it the center of attraction for equestrian enthusiasts. Multi million dollar training and equestrian estates, miles of horse trails, international standard 18 hole golf courses, and beautiful landscaped neighborhoods create scenes of charm and beauty not to be missed. Just 20 minutes from Kravis Cultural Center, which offers concerts, opera and plays, and just over a half hour to beaches and boating facilities, Wellington has something for everyone!

Originally the largest strawberry patch in the world, the village of Wellington was founded in the 1950s when C. Oliver Wellington, of the Flying Cow Ranch bought 18,000 acres of swampland in central Palm Beach County. Palm Beach County approved a planned unit development program for Wellington in 1972, and it began and continued as a bedroom community for many years. There was little to do, and almost no shopping centers or restaurants until wellington was incorporated in 1995. Recent development has seen a sea change in what the village has to offer. Combined with its small community appeal, charming village lifestyle, and access to recent modern developments, combined with a strong education system, makes Wellington a good place for people looking for a peaceful life, or to raise a family.

In the matter of Primary and secondary schools, for example, Wellington is served by The School District of Palm Beach County, and includes public schools like New Horizons Elementary School, Wellington Elementary School, Emerald Cove Middle School, Polo Park Middle School, Wellington High School, Palm Beach Central High School and many more. Private schools include Wellington Christian School, Dillon Country Day School, Conservatory Prep Senior High, etc. Community colleges may soon include Palm Beach Community College which is looking to build a Wellington campus. This abundance of educational facilities, the availability of ample open spaces, and the current convenient access to both employment centers, and shopping, and entertainment, not to mention the many recreational activities available --- have all combined to raise the appeal of Wellington for both families and new or branching businesses. Average household incomes are high, among the highest in the state, and the economic outlook for the future strong and robust.

Wellington is renowned for equestrian and polo events, and for its many training and equestrian estates. The village hosts the Winter Equestrian Festival and the National Horse Show, and attracts the world's greatest polo players for other events. Other seasonal events include the annual Top Gun model aircraft show as well as the holiday parades. Entertainment venues are close by, and a regional mall -- The Mall at Wellington Green-has been recently added. There are outdoor shopping venues with well known commercial brands and a new mega shopping mall. West Palm's City Place and Palm Beach's Worth Avenue are close enough to be easy access, and the area teems with restaurants, entertainment and cultural venues, and so on. Public parks and ball fields, A-rated schools, and beach activities a mere half hour's drive away makes for fun and adventure.
