Orlando Facts, History, and Local Events

Orlando, central Florida, is the county seat of the Orange County. With a population of over 230,000, Orlando is the 5th most populous city in Florida. This highly urbanized and industrial city stands in the middle of what used to be a major citrus growing region. Probably best known for the tourist destinations in the area, such as the Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and the Walt Disney World, Orlando is also home to a number of thriving companies that serve Central Florida. University of Central Florida at Orlando has the largest student enrollment of any campus in Florida, and is among the largest in the US.

Orlando, Florida Area MapBefore 1836, Orlando was home to a sparse population of Native American tribes like the Creek. It used to be called Jernigan, after Aaron Jernigan, a cattleman who was the first European settler here. According to local legend, Orlando Reeves, a soldier in the Second Seminole War who died here, is the reason why this place has its current name. Apparently, early settlers found his name carved on trees and began to call the area "Orlando's grave" which eventually became just Orlando. However, that's not the only version, and another legend attributes the name to the Shakespeare play As You Like It, with the city being called Orlando and a main street called Rosalind Avenue.

Although Fort Gatlin was established during the Second Seminole War, it was abandoned at the end of the war, and settlement began in earnest only after the third war, in the 1850's. Cattle ranching was the main occupation of the early settlers, until Mosquito County was divided and Orlando was made the new county seat of Orange County. Although it remained much of a rural area all through the Civil War, it grew exponentially in the Reconstruction Era just before and after it was incorporated as a town, 1875, and city. 1885. The twenty years after incorporation as town was considered the Golden Era. Orlando became the very center of the citrus industry in the state until the Great Freeze of 1894-95 forced smaller owners to sell put to "citrus barons" and shifting the whole shebang further south.

In the 20th century, especially around the 1920's, Orlando began emerging as a popular resort and tourist destination. There was extensive building, in housing and land prices rose sharply. Although the boom was ended by multiple hurricanes and the great depression, things picked up again after the 50's with defense and aerospace taking an interest. In 1971 Walt Disney World opened, triggering an unprecedented growth in tourism, and population and economy with it. Today, Orlando is still one of the most popular vacation destinations - worldwide. Well connected by air and road, Orlando is an important center of industry and high-technology. The technology industry alone is worth several billion employing more than 50,000 people. From missile systems, to airplanes, high tech research, to defense simulations, Orlando has it all. Being close to Patrick Air Force Base, Cape Canaveral, and Kennedy Space Center means that residents can live here and commute quite efficiently.

Some of the best known restaurant chains, great shopping, and lots of entertainment make the city of Orlando great to live in or visit. A warm, humid, subtropical climate means no extremes - with a hot and rainy summer, and a dry winter. During summer months, afternoon thunderstorms are common, with spectacular lightning displays while winter sees much less rain. The Orlando Metropolitan Area is also known particularly for its theater population, with many professional and semi-professional houses and community theaters, and culminating in the Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival held every spring. Shopping malls, upscale department stores, and a hopping nightlife make the city a lot of fun!
