Naples Facts, History, and Local Events
Naples -- with its exquisite Florida sunsets, its white sand beaches, its incredible shopping experience, and its championship golf courses -- has become one of the premier tourist destinations in South Florida. It is also a popular place for relocation or a second home, with luxurious waterfront estates and great condos being available to buyers. Sometimes called the Crown Jewel of Southwest Florida, Naples hugs the Gulf of Mexico coast. Not only does it offer amazing shopping, world class dining and challenging golf, it is minutes away from the seclusion and calm of island life, and very close to the untamed wilderness of The Florida Everglades. With some of the calmest seas in the country, Naples has a great attraction for lovers of water recreation. For the sports enthusiast, or the outdoorsy person, there are friendly parks, lovely green picnic spaces and many recreational facilities. Being the principal city of a major metropolitan area -- the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area, this city of roughly 22.000 people is the County Seat.
Naples nestles on the coast between the Gulf and the Everglades. The community combines its scenic natural beauty and the relaxed lifestyle of a small town, with the sophisticated living of a major metropolitan area. Clean white beaches, and top notch golf courses, balance eco-adventures and outdoor activities, and a range of businesses and services make life perfect for residents and visitors alike. It not only has world-class restaurants and shopping establishments, but also boasts vibrant arts, culture, and entertainment scenes. There are a number of community as well as charity events that are a regular part of the cosmopolitan Naples life. Not surprisingly, most visitors tend to fall in love with the city, and a number of them, over the years, choose to make their home here. Choices for a home or a vacation property range from cozy cottages to classy estate homes, from spectacular beach residences to resort style communities.
Once a sleepy fishing village, Naples has grown into The Palm Beach of Florida’s West Coast in recent years. From a solely resort community, it has become an elegant shopping destination, withy a number of major centers for retail such as Fifth Avenue South, The Waterside Shops, the Coastland Center, and The Village on Venetian Bay. There are also a range of fine dining options, as well as museums, art galleries, numerous golf courses, and much more. The area also offers a lot of fresh and salt water fishing, beach activities, boating, and tennis. Residents also have the advantage of a very good system of healthcare facilities. Today Naples is a vibrant, and very cosmopolitan community, that has managed to hold on to its friendly charm and preserved its natural beauty. No wonder it features on the 2004 list of Top 100 Places to Live compiled by Relocate America.
Historically, the earliest people to inhabit the seven miles that is Naples today were the Native Americans called the Caloosa. The first European settlers were Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins who arrived in the area in the 1860's. The city was founded by the US Senator, from Kentucky, John Stuart Williams and Walter N. Haldeman, a businessman. The 1870s and 1980s were a time of publicity, with numerous magazine articles and newspaper stories extolling the superb climate the richness of fishing and hunting, and the startling natural beauty of the area. Naples soon became a popular winter resort and a playground for celebrities. In 1923, the Collier County was created, and Naples became the county seat. The Tamiami Trail opened in 1926, connecting the community to major cities like Tampa and Miami, and laying the foundation for the current prosperity and popularity of Naples.
