Yorba Linda, California Facts, History, and Local Events
Yorba Linda is situated on the southern California coast, between Los Angeles and San Diego. It borders on Anaheim, Placentia, Brea, and unincorporated parts of the Orange County. It is a great place to make your base when taking in the sights of the county, because it is conveniently located. It is a mere 8 miles from Angel Stadium, which is the home of the Angels of Anaheim. It is just ten miles from Disneyland. For the people looking for more rugged adventure, the San Bernardino and the San Gabriel Mountains are both within an hour's drive, with a rich treasure trove of camping, skiing, hiking, and fishing adventures. A suburban center with a little over 65,000 people, Yorba Linda has mostly single family homes, built on fairly large lots and is mostly a residential community. It is committed to equestrian activities, and is known for its many equestrian facilities and events. Yorba Linda has three top of the line equestrian arenas, and over a hundred miles of biking walking and equestrian trails.
The city is also where Richard Nixon, 37th President of the United States, was born. The Richard Nixon Library is a popular attraction till date. Today, Yorba Linda is an affluent suburb a short drive northeast from Downtown Santa Ana. With just over 70,000 people calling it home, the city is a fast growing urban section of the county. Yorba Linda was ranked among the richest cities in the U.S., and THE richest in Orange County, in 2005, according to census data. It is unique among towns of comparable size in the county, and the state of California, because six-figure annual family incomes seem to be the rule here rather than the exception.
There is a saying here that if only the water had tasted better or a railroad had been built, Yorba Linda might have been a completely different place today. When promoters first began to develop the area, trying to found Carlton in 1888 on some 4 hundred acres of the northern part of this city, Yorba Linda, they found some takers. Although the land was near a planned railroad, and had water, the new township did not last very long. The water soon turned brackish, the railroad didn't get built, and the people who had arrived, left. Instead of becoming Carlton city, an agricultural and industrial center, the entire area eventually became the peaceful family town of Yorba Linda.
At one time, the area was home to Tongva, Luiseno, and Juaneqo Indians. In the more modern period, the land belonged to Bernardo Yorba, and was a part of a 1830s Mexican government land grant. The land later passed on to his successors, and was sold in 1907. Three or four changes of ownership found the land in the hands of the Janss Investment Co. which began development of the city, in 1909, as a family community. It began as a mainly agricultural community, and lemon and orange groves began to be planted. The population of the community was still under fifty. Originally, even the property deeds had clauses which prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages by the owners, or the land would be forfeit. It was incorporated in 1967 and has since seen a residence and development boom. Today there are more than 1,000 commercial businesses, and 1,500 additional home based ones in the city.
There is much to see and do here, with its rich and varied history preserved in numerous monuments around tow, top-tier golf facilities, museums, shopping, Spotlight Theater, and so much more.
