Westlake Village Facts, History, and Local Events
The City of Westlake Village is a unique city in the Ventura Freeway Technology Corridor, which is one of the major Technology R&D and growth areas in southern California. Westlake Village is a master planned community, formed by the American Hawaiian Steamship Company in 1966, and straddling the Los Angeles and Ventura county line, with a portion of the community in each county. Being a short distance, less than 10 miles, from the Pacific Ocean, this community is the perfect weekend getaway or relocation destination, a mere 35 miles from Los Angeles city. It is surrounded by the Simi Hills and the Santa Monica Mountains. Situated just about halfway between downtown Los Angeles and the city of Santa Barbara, Westlake Village provides residents with verdant beauty and fresh, clean air. With a wonderful, mild Mediterranean climate throughout the year, Westlake Village is a unique community, located across the Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and in the City of Thousand Oaks.
The original development of this amazing community began with the American Hawaiian Steamship Company and its efforts in the late 1960s. Nestling on the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, Westlake Village consists of more than twenty different neighborhoods. The eastern part of the community is an incorporated city – named Westlake Village -- on the western border of the Los Angeles County. It is one of the most affluent communities in the entire Greater Los Angeles Area. On the other hand, the western part of the community falls inside the Thousand Oaks city limits, in neighboring Ventura County. In spite of being in a different county, the properties and businesses on this portion of the community legally use the actual Westlake Village address. The community has a quaint charm, in spite of, or maybe because of, its unique geographical location. Resident associations are active in community life, and promoting and maintaining the high quality of social and architectural standards is a major priority for residents.
There are as many as 850 commercial and light industrial businesses within the larger limits of the Westlake Village community. There are also numerous high-tech manufacturing firms and R&D firms, as well as companies specializing in biotechnology and healthcare. The community is home to the corporate headquarters of K-Swiss and the Dole Food Company. Culturally active, the city boasts the Westlake Village Civic Arts Plaza, offering a wide range of performances from popular entertainers to Broadway musicals, from ballet and symphony to live theatre, comedy, and jazz. The community is family-friendly and one of the safest cities of comparable size in the US. Volunteer groups make a positive impact and award winning schools provide for the communities education needs.
Although the City of Westlake Village was incorporated in 1964, the area was first inhabited by humans over 3,000 years ago. Chumash Indians lived in the area as can be seen from many excavations, and archaeological sites, containing the rock paintings they left behind. Much later, in the 1770s, Captain Gaspar de Portola brought explorers and missionaries over the El Camino Real, but none settled here. Eventually the Spanish settled the area after being given huge land grants. When California joined the union in 1850, the area that is Ventura County today was divided among 19 families. The site where Westlake Village later grew was between two Mexican land grants -- Conejo and Virgenes. In 1881, a large portion of this land was bought by the Russell brothers and used for cattle grazing, until, in l963, ownership was transferred to the American- Hawaiian Steamship Company. The company, along with Prudential Insurance Company, designed and master planned this unique, and integrated, community which has now become an acclaimed model for planned communities, and one of the most successful suburbs, throughout the nation.
