Talega Facts, History, and Local Events
Talega, a master planned community, is just up the hill from the coast, situated on 3500 acres in San Clemente. There are nineteen neighborhoods, offering the residents a classic, laid back, golden California beach town lifestyle. The community is perfect and idyllic for families looking for a quiet home in a coastal paradise. The community has held on to its way of life and values, and places a priority on family, community bonding, and open green spaces.
There are many choices when you think of recreation in Talega. Kids and grown-ups alike are likely to enjoy biking or hiking the nineteen miles of trails. The more strenuously inclined can choose the 760-foot climb up Nob Hill. The seven-acre Swim and Athletic Club is great for water activities, roller sports, tennis, basketball, sand volley ball, and picnics. With all that, there is an eighteen-hole golf course, just in case you want to brush up your tee-off skills in this Spanish Village by the Sea. Although Talega is officially within San Clemente, most locals consider it to be a separate community altogether. Its location in hilly terrain cause many transportation problems for the community. Until the March of 2009, only two main roads existed out of Talega, although an extension had been proposed, to the La Pata, to eliminate the gaps. Talega schools are under the Capistrano Unified School District and the community has two elementary, and one middle school.
Located roughly sixty miles from Los Angeles and about fifty from San Diego, the area was uninhabited until around 1776. Settlement began with the establishment of the Mission San Juan Capistrano. Local villages started to be built up, inhabited by both Indian and Spanish settlers. Around the early 20th century, after changing hands a few times, the property was bought by Ole Hanson, ex Seattle mayor, who began development here for people looking to escape the frenetic pace of city life. Most buildings were designed in the classic Spanish building style with characteristic red tile roof and soon became quite popular. It grew, along with San Clemente, and became a popular destination for tourists as well as young families looking to relocate, around the 1960's. However, the community has held on to the atmosphere of small town life, ideal to live in and to raise a family. Talega is a stable and balanced community with locals taking pride in their city and their values.
Attraction and amenities include the 18-hole Talega Gold Golf Club, and the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, which is the historic estate of founder Ole Hanson. The Cabrillo Playhouse is a small theater converted from a historic building. If you are not so much inclined towards history, there is a lot of other stuff to do in the area. Other activities include beaches, like the San Clemente State Beach and the San Onofre State Beach, and annual events like the Candy Cane Festival, the Easter Eggstravaganza, and the Cinco de Mayo. Many urban centers are close by, within easy driving distance, where a local or a visitor can chase more recreation too.
