San Juan Capistrano Facts, History, and Local Events

San Juan Capistrano is the ideal place for a history and nature enthusiast to spend time in. Ambling down the Historic Streets of San Juan Capistrano is a surefire way of taking a trip back in time. Explore one of the most beautiful missions in California or breathe in the fabulous seaside air in this California Gold Coast city. From fine dining at some of the choicest restaurants, to entertainment and events that call to you again and again, San Juan Capistrano has it all. It is a center for music and culture, specialty shops and arty boutiques, great museums and collectible antiques, dance floors and gourmet coffee shops. The community truly has it all!

Unlike most cities in Orange County, San Juan Capistrano is not really a recent settlement. In fact, uniquely for this area, it was founded by the earliest inhabitants of California. Today, after over two hundred years of history, the community continues to grow and evolve, while maintaining the essential nature of a haven. Long before any Europeans set foot in the area was inhabited by peaceful Indian tribes. There is ample evidence of their lifestyle and presence in the form of artifacts, and descendants. In the 18th century, Franciscan Missionaries established the California missions. The Mission of San Juan Capistrano was established in November 1776, and soon became the home of nearly a thousand Indian converts engaged in farming, herding, soap and candle making, smelting, weaving and tanning. Rapid population growth resulted in the building of numerous adobe homes.

San Juan Capistrano California Area Map A Mexican government declaration, in 1841, designated San Juan Capistrano a town. When California attained statehood, the town became a major rest and resupply points on the road from San Diego to Los Angeles. The gold rush added to its growth, and when the ranches declined, settlers turned to farming. By the late 19th century, the area saw a land boom and burgeoning growth. By the turn of the 20th century, San Juan Capistrano became a stable, tight knit community primarily unmarred by the over development in cities around it. A General plan created in the 1970s has preserved the city's historic landmarks and open spaces, has controlled and balanced development, and preserved the unique heritage, historical, and cultural of San Juan Capistrano.

The primary attraction, and historical landmark, of the community is the Mission San Juan Capistrano, a Catholic mission founded in 1776 and named after Giovanni da Capistrano a Franciscan saint. The Serra Chapel, here, is the oldest in-use building in all of California, and the mission had the oldest vineyard and the first winery within the state. Also called the Jewel of the Missions, the mission is one of the most important of California's historical, and cultural, landmarks. Areas of historical interest include the adobe barracks, olive millstone, the cemetery, the ancient aqueduct system, the original Church and the Friar's quarters. It is most famous, however, for the annual flight of the swallows when thousands of cliff swallows return from migration.

Other attractions include the Camino Real Playhouse which stages live theater performances, the Zoomars Petting Zoo & Bird Park, the perfect place to take the kids, holding parties or for family gatherings and picnics. The Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park lies among river terraces and sandstone canyons in the Santa Ana Mountains, perfect for picnics, camping, horse back riding, hiking, and wildlife explorations.
