San Francisco County Quick Facts

San Francisco County, which is combined with the city of the same name for most census and governing purposes, is the fourth-largest city in the state of California and the 14th largest in America. The city-county is home to about 800,000 people, and is recognized world-wide for attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge, its modern art museum, the Chinatown neighborhood and its iconic cable cars. The Haight-Ashbury neighborhood is famous for its spot as the heart of the ’60s peace movement. Getting around the county is easy to do, as there are a number of public transit options, from buses and railroads to cable cars and the extensive BART rail system. Nearly one-third of residents use public transportation to commute in the area, a significantly higher portion than in most U.S. cities. The area is a hub for West Coast financial commerce, with over 30 banks, a half dozen companies on the Fortune 500 list, and a Federal Reserve regional bank.

The county is home to what is one of the most popular tourist locales in America, at No. 4 on the list, and there is plenty for those tourists to see and do. Nearly 20 museums are in operation, as well as a ballet, symphony, opera and zoo, and major-league baseball and football teams are housed here. An international commercial airport lies south of the county in San Mateo County. The school system here is quite extensive, with more than 30 preschools, over 100 elementary, middle and high schools and nearly 10 charter schools. Nearly half a dozen colleges are found within the city-county as well, including some that specialize in art, music and food.
